Relative-Strength Sector Rotation

MomentumPositionConservativeCoreFoundationalLive-automated
Thesis

Leadership persists. Rank sectors by trailing relative strength and hold the strongest few, rotating monthly. Capital and narrative flow toward what is already working, so owning the leaders and dropping the laggards harvests cross-sectional momentum with low turnover.

Setup & Rules

Rank sector ETFs on blended 3/6/12-month relative strength. Hold the top cohort; drop anything that falls out of the leadership band. A simple, transparent, rules-first sleeve.

Entry

Rebalance monthly into the current leaders. No forecasting — the ranking is the entire decision, which is precisely why it is disciplined.

Exit

A holding exits automatically when it drops out of the leadership band at the next rebalance. Optionally overlay a broad-market trend filter to step aside in deep bear regimes.

Risk Management

Diversified across sectors, so single-name risk is muted; the real risk is a sharp regime whipsaw. The optional index trend filter is the main drawdown control.

Portfolio Management

A low-maintenance core allocation. Combine with the PEAD sleeve for single-name alpha on top of the sector beta — the graph pairs them for a reason.

Evidence

57% of months positive, +0.7 average R, conviction rising. Low turnover keeps costs down and makes it one of the most durable, teachable edges in the vault.

Flywheel Automation

A monthly ranking job rebalances on Alpaca. Extremely latency-tolerant — a delayed rebalance barely matters — so downtime cost is minimal.
